Steel and mass production:

Steel being one of the most rugged and versatile metal features in most of the modern day machines as a primary component. This has improved the production quotients to an incredibly huge proportion. Now as steel is being so extensively used itself, then there is a real need to make sure that its availability is unhindered. Mass production helps back steel in this; smelting and forging large steel strips and blanks in the mass production factories has helped gravely in ensuring the surplus supply of steel as a raw material. Steel slitting is the machining process using which huge rolls and blanks of steel are made into smaller and usable sizes. This process helps largely in improving the circulation of steel by allowing the larger pieces of steel being used to create smaller and more convenient blanks and rolls.

Types of steel slitting:

While steel slitting can be divided in three types according to the type of steel being machined. This is the general way of classifying any of the metal machining procedures. But steel slitting, also known by the name of roll slitting can be classified according to the procedure of the slitting.

  • Log slitting: This is relatively simple procedure. It uses a cutting mechanism and the whole roll being passed through it like an individual log. This procedure is used for slitting the softer grade steel. Its effectiveness and finish gets ruined along with the increasing hardness of the steel being machined. The quality of this procedure depends highly on the hardness quality or the carbon content of the steel being machined. This process is generally adopted for cold rolled steel coils. It is comparably easier to establish and handle and is pretty widely used.

  • Rewind slitting: In this procedure, the log strip is first rolled open and the sheets are passed through the cutting mechanism, one at a time. Once the sheet is cut, it is rewound in smaller bobbins. This method is better for the harder grade steel as it allows the cutting arm to machine one sheet at a time giving better finish. Using this method for softer grade steels is not economical as the setup for unwinding and then rewinding requires larger shop floor area and thus greater capital as well as running costs. Therefore it is mostly used for hot rolled steel coils.

Steel slitting is quite an important machining technique as it increases the usability quotient of steel by getting the larger, mass produced steel logs to be cut and divided in more handy and usable sizes.
